Musical Performance

Dear Syringa Families,

Please mark your calendars for a special concert for grades 4-7, June 5th at 6 pm right here in our Heart Space. The students have worked so hard all semester and have moved me to tears with their noble interpretations of the music.
The Community Campus auditorium was booked for an all-school spring concert, but other large groups have 1st dibs if needed. We got bumped, so to speak. We are making the best of it by having classes perform at their plays, at Mayfair, during the last day of school celebration, and on June 5th.
Each student is an integral part of our music and attendance is mandatory, as this is our only chance to culminate the work of the semester into a polished performance. Performing is a key component of studying music and gives the students a chance to be appreciated for their efforts. Students should arrive at 5:40 to tune. Students should dress up!
PLEASE have your child play (practice) for you at home every day between now and then.
I am so proud of the efforts of each student in the class and am excited to have them share their beauty with all of you.
See you all next Wednesday!
Cheers,
Erin Storey

Playing with Clay, For a Cause

Students from the Syringa Mountain School in Hailey threw clay for a good cause on Dec. 11, making dishes for The Hunger Coalition’s Empty Bowls fundraiser next month. On Jan. 14, the handmade bowls will be filled with scratch-made soups, chili, salads, breads and desserts donated by local chefs and caterers. Sold for $20 apiece, the bowls raise money to help fight hunger in the Wood River Valley. With the help of Boulder Mountain Clayworks, guests will have more than 300 locally made bowls to choose from, including a handful made by the grade-schoolers from Syringa charter school. “We were so thrilled to have an opportunity to take part in an event that brings arts and education together with so many great valley organizations,” said Julie Evans, student support coordinator at the school. “It feels like the true spirit of giving!”

Ashley Mekeel

Ms. Ashley was born and raised in rural, northern Illinois. Ashley and her husband Keith felt drawn to move to the mountains of Idaho after a cross-country road trip in the summer of 2019. They have been living in the Wood River Valley since November of 2019. They have 3 puppy children who act as “teacher helpers” in the music classroom at Syringa.

Ashley holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education and a Master of Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa. She holds a certified teaching license in the state of Idaho. Ashley also owns and operates Wood River Piano, LLC, where she teaches classical piano to many local students.  Every Sunday, Ashley can be found working as the musical director/piano accompanist at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Hailey.

Prior to teaching at Syringa, Ashley taught K-12 music in Shoshone, Idaho, piano at several music academies, also a community college back in Illinois. Ashley enjoys  seeing her students grow as budding musicians.

Fun Fact:  I love watching WNBA basketball, specifically Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.
